Article #23 of Alodia’s Mental Strength Curriculum – The Power of Enthusiam
“Your energy and enjoyment, drive and dedication will stimulate and greatly inspire others.”
To fully achieve the best of which you’re capable, you must LOVE what you do! Hard work and enthusiasm are bound together. Hard work without enthusiasm leads to boredom. Enthusiasm without hard work leads to unrealized potential. When they are present together, they create a solid foundation leading to success!
What is the difference between many good and great players and good and great teams?   Talent is obviously important but is not the key difference. The catalyst is a difference in attitude. Good or average teams and players are willing to work to support the team. Great teams and players are eager to give their best unselfishly for the good of the team.
They are filled with the unleashing power of enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is present in three areas: people, fundamentals, and learning.

People

Enthusiasm in this area is incredibly infectious. It rubs off on everyone who comes in contact with you. You communicate your enthusiasm through your words, voice quality, and body language. Ask yourself, every time you pick up a ball or step on the court…what are you communicating? With positive enthusiasm, those around you immediately sense it whether it is your bounce in your step or the brightness in your eyes. You simply can’t wait to dig into whatever you are looking to accomplish or perform.
Enthusiasm intensifies your focus and ignites your hard work.
The most enthusiastic players look for the best in themselves and others. Your enthusiasm will work like a magnet drawing out confidence and performance qualities to help you and your teammates. When have you radiated with constant enthusiasm? What results did it produce for you and your teammates? Our bet is that those that combine enthusiasm with hard work over and over produce results that are in line with their aspirations. The power of enthusiasm is contagious. Bringing enthusiasm to the most mundane and to the extremely enjoyable drills or plays in practice and games takes you one step closer to success.
We have requested that many of you list the three to five positive things that you do after every game and practice. Have you been doing this? What have been the results of this? Your mind must forget the negative things and move forward and focus on the positive things in your game. Taking it to the next level is noticing and expressing when your teammates do positive things and letting them know about them. It can be as simple as going out of your way to point to a teammate that made a great pass, helping a player up that dove on the floor to get a loose ball, helping a young teammate that comes into the game for the first time to let them know that you believe in them, and many, many more.
As you weave enthusiasm into your game and everyday life, it can stimulate others. We’d also say to use it in moderation and at the appropriate times. What we mean by this is to avoid extreme highs since they usually don’t work over time. In fact, too much emotion can be counterproductive. Extreme highs can lead to lows – such swings of intensity can result in instability. We want our students on an even keel so that their thinking isn’t adversely affected by emotion. Quiet enthusiasm and enthusiasm at the appropriate moments gets results. It exudes confidence and rubs off in wonderful ways.
You put in a ton of time practicing to perform at the next level. Put in the hard work and enjoy yourself and show the enthusiasm that drives you to perform your best!
